Columbia Junior High's Jazz Band is one of the district's premier ensembles.  The group is extremely

active, participating in numerous contests, concerts, and community events throughout the year.   CJH's

Jazz Band meets before school, from 6:45-7:30 am , Mondays through Thursdays.  All students are

graded and freshman can receive 1/2 credit in the arts.

The Jazz Band receives the most requests for outside performances due to that fact that the style of

music they play reaches all age groups.  The group focuses primarily on swing and bop, though they do

incorporate elements of latin, bossa nova, and funk.  They have been the featured performers at

fundraisers, banquets, and special events.

In the two years that the band has been in existence, they have participated in the Commencement Bay

Jazz Contest, The Olympia Jazz Festial, the Frontier Jazz Festival, and the Bellevue Jazz Festival.  Their

accolades include 1st place at the 2004 Commencement Bay Jazz Contest and 2nd place at the 2005

Bellevue Jazz Festival.
