Mrs.
Aker grew up in Tennessee and got her B.S. in biology
from the University
of Tennessee in 1995. She then moved
to Hawaii, where she completed graduate work in biomedical
sciences (and booked sportfishing charters, among
other things). In 1998, she moved to
California to take a teaching position at J.L.
Stanford Middle School in Palo Alto, CA, where she
stayed for 3 years. It is there where she met her husband.
She and her husband decided to move to Washington state
in 2001. Since then, Mrs. Aker has taught science at Meeker
Middle School and the Federal
Way Public Academy, in addition
to teaching environmental education with Puget
Sound Energy.
This is her third year at Columbia Junior High School.
She began work on her M.S. in Science Education at Walden
University in January 2007.
In
addition to teaching science, Mrs. Aker is a published
poet and volunteers at the WA
Ferret Rescue and Shelter. She enjoys gardening,
playing DDR, and playing with her menagerie of animals
(2 dogs, 2 cats, 5 ferrets, and 2 large fish tanks).
