Columbia Junior High Physical Education and Health

Strive to be positive, active and healthy in your daily life

Course Philosophy/Description:

In health students will be exposed to acceptable health attitudes, judgment, knowledge and practices in their growth and development, decision making and human relationships. In physical education the student will learn concepts and skills to improve their own health and fitness. Maintaining high levels of health and fitness are critical aspects of living. The goal is to practice social, emotional and physical behaviors that positively affect one's total life, 24 hours a day. Students will take part in the required physical education and health class for one semester. One quarter of health and one quarter of Physical Education.

Health Materials:

Students will need to bring a 3 ring binder notebook as well as a journal. Each day students will bring a writing utensil, paper and colored pens or pencils.

Grading:

Students will earn their grade based equally on tests, quizzes, classroom assignments, journal writing, cooperative activities and daily participation.

P.E. Clothing Expectations:

All clothing must be appropriate and in good taste and follow the guidelines of the school dress code. Gym style shorts are to be worn. The shorts are to be worn at the waist; sagging of any kind will not be allowed. To help ensure proper foot and ankle support for the student, court shoes with velcro straps or laces tightly tied on the outside need to be worn. All students must wear socks with their shoes.

Lockers:

Each student is assigned an individual P.E. locker and needs to purchase a combination lock. The student needs to take responsibility for his/her clothing. The P.E. department is not responsible for clothing problems.

Participation Expectations:

Daily attendance and participation in class activities are both important to the student's success. If your child is unable to participate or participate on a limited bases, you will need to notify me in writing. State law requires a physicians note if the period of non-participation is longer than three days. District policy also requires a note from your physician to return to activities.

Students are expected to suit up and participate daily. The following will negatively affect a student's grade: excessive excused absences in which the student does not make up in the appropriate time frame, an unexcused absence, no-suit or removal from class because of disruptive behavior or lack of serious effort to participate.

Students in after school activities must participate in P.E. class to be eligible to participate in practices or games.

 Behavior Expectations:

*Cooperation *Respect for each other and equipment *Excitement and energy for activity * Good effort on all activities * Follow all classroom, locker room and school rules*

Grading:
To achieve a passing grade, all students must:
1. Participate daily
2. Complete all timed runs
3. Take all written tests
4. Complete all class assignments
5. Complete all make up work from excused absences
Students may make up their excused absences or excused no-suits if they wish to make up the lost participation points. Students have 5 school days after an excused absence or excused no-suit to do make up work. Arrangements must be made with the teacher and completed before or after school.
6. Students must be in the classroom or the locker room when the final bell rings. In P.E. a student will loose 3 points off their daily grade for each tardy. Three or more tardies in a quarter will result in discipline actions.

If a student fails to dress down for more than 5 days (unexcused) he/she will fail.
