Dear First Grade Parents:
You and your child are invited to join Discovery’s Read and Lead! Read and Lead is our home reading incentive program sponsored by the PTA and directed by Mrs. Axton and Mrs. Boitano. During the program, you and your child will read aloud to each other every day at home. Research shows that one simple activity — reading aloud — is the best way to prepare children for learning to read and to keep them reading as they learn and grow. When children become good readers in the early grades, they are more likely to become better learners throughout their school years.
For each 100 minutes read, your child will receive a prize. In addition, students who read 400 minutes or more in each of the three sessions will be invited to a reward party. Students who meet the goal of 400 minutes in each session will be invited to a special celebration at the end of the year.
The most important part of Read and Lead is adult involvement. You are asked to listen to your child read 10 minutes or more a day, at least five days a week.
We will select a book at your child’s reading level and send it home in a special book bag. To reach 10 minutes of student reading, your child should read his/her book at least twice. The second time will be easier and smoother. Your child may return his/her book every day to have it exchanged for another one. You may also read books from home or the library.
Attached you will find a contract that needs to be read and signed by you and your child and returned to school. Read and Lead begins Monday, October 5th.
