International Dot Day!

Inspired by the wonderful book "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds.

“Art class is over, but Vashti is sitting glued to her chair in front of a blank piece of paper. The words of her teacher are a gentle invitation to express herself.

But Vashti can’t draw - she’s no artist. To prove her point, Vashti jabs at a blank sheet of paper to make an unremarkable and angry mark. "There!" she says.

That one little dot marks the beginning of Vashti’s journey of surprise and self-discovery. That special moment is the core of Peter H. Reynolds’ delicate fable about the creative spirit in all of us. With a simple, witty story and free-spirited illustrations, Reynolds' book, The Dot, has been transformed into a magical animated short film, enticing even the stubbornly uncreative among us to make a mark - and follow where it takes us.”

Peter H. Reynolds’ book “The Dot” is having its sixth birthday. It’s original Candlewick Press publication date was September 15, 2003. Celebrations happened all around the world to commemorate this classic book that has inspired so many children and adults.

Here is how the Endeavour 5th graders took part in the day. On September 15th, we read the book “The Dot” and also the book "Ish". Then we made our mark with dots. Big dots, little dots, dots without dots, fancy dots, plain dots, etc.

The author, Peter H. Reynolds, wrote this about Dot Day,

“Spread the word… Dot Day.. read The Dot, wear dots, eat dots, draw dots, frame dots, connect the dots, splurge on art supplies, try a new medium – a new instrument, write a poem, rearrange your furniture, reconnect the dots with an old friend, make something, make something with a friend, share your creativity with the world. No strict rules on how to celebrate!”
