Frida Kahlo was a painter from Mexico who, because of injuries suffered in a traumatic bus accident, spent a great deal of time painting from bed.  She painted over 50 self-portraits during her short life.  She communicated through her artwork and we were inspired by her.  The 5th graders completed a self-portrait drawing and then told us something about themselves with additional details in the background or clothing.  The drawings were completed after an introduction to shading and colored pencils.
