*“I will be fair, and I won’t always be equal”

Imagine ten patients waiting for their turn to see the doctor. One has a cold, one has broken arm, one has pneumonia, one has poison ivy, one has a sprained ankle, one has diarrhea, one has allergies, one has chicken pox, one has a splinter, and another came in for an annual checkup. All of a sudden the doctor comes out and announces to the patients that today is aspirin day. All patients will be treated equally and given aspirin to solve their ailments.

Just as this example above is outrageous, so is treating each student exactly the same for assignments and discipline. Each student has different learning styles, emotional needs, and life experiences. Assigning a blanket consequence does not allow each student to grow and learn. Each learning experience may allow students different levels of growth. If a student improves significantly, but does not master the concept, then it will be reflected in the engagement grade, not the achievement grade.

I will use the published consequence and reward charts as a starting place for consistency. As the year develops I will be fair, and I won’t always be equal to allow students to succeed.
