Writing

Writing is necessary is all subject matters from science, to social studies, to math. In second grade we encourage inventive spelling such as , "I luv cats becuz thr soft", in rough draft writing assignments because it frees the flow of ideas. We expect that all final copies of writing will be in correct format, with correct spelling, to the best of the student's abilities.

We begin second grade by working on writing complete sentences. Students will work up to writing a paragraph. Ideally, second grade students should be able to write a five sentence paragraph by the end of second grade.

Second grade students struggle with writing conventions: Capitals, periods, commas, apostrophes, quotations, etc. You can help by checking over your child's work when s/he has writing opportunities. It would be a great idea to have your child keep a journal at home. Another great at-home writing assignment would be to have your child write to his/her relatives from time-to-time. Don't forget to have your child take his/her journal with them on family vacations. Thanks for your support at home.
