KIDS FOR KENYA !
Students of Shammah Academy Machakos, Kenya
This year our class will be studying about people and cultures from around the world. We will also be reading about children who have decided to take steps toward solving real world problems. As part of our studies we will be continuing a program initiated last year called Kids For Kenya. Students in Mrs. Merdian's classroom will be automatically involved with this program and also this year we will have a Kids for Kenya Club so that other students at Endeavour who are especially interested in helping can become more directly involved. The main goals of this program are: (1) raise awareness about life in Kenya and other developing countries including the challenges faced by the people and development success stories (2) help with Kenyan development projects (3) learn to become leaders in our school and community. Kids for Kenya students will be having fund raising activities and events to raise $15,000 to build four new classrooms at a primary school in Kenya called Shammah Academy. Mrs. Merdian lived on the coffee cooperative where the school is located for a year and a half as a student in 1980/81, and she returned to visit her friends there in the summer of 2006. We started our fund raising for Shammah Academy at the end of the 2006/07 school year with an aluminum can drive. We are continuing the can drive all this year, and we will be adding other fundraising activities as well. Please consider saving your cans and donating them to this cause. Our next can collection day will be in mid-December. Please check this website for updates - or contact Mrs. Merdian if you have questions. 253 517-1400. Thank you!
