A
delightful part of German life is an afternoon "meal"
called KAFFEE, which is actually Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and
cake). "Kaffee" is served at a table set with
love and care, a nice tablecloth, good china, and flowers.
The cakes offered may be fruit cakes, pastry, Torte (layered cakes),
Kuchen (single layer cake like cheese cake, bundt cake, or Apfelstrudel),
or any combination thereof. Guests are often invited for
"Kaffee" rather than dinner. Birthdays, holidays,
Sundays, etc. are also usually celebrated at a "Kaffee"
to which friends and relatives are invited. The German II
students have been studying the traditional five meals a day in
the German-speaking countries: "Fruestueck, Zweites
Fruestueck, Mittagessen, Kaffee, and Abendessen/ Abendbrot.
On January 10th the German II students transformed their classroom
into a German Konditorei (pastry shop), with tablecloths, fine
china, flowers, candles, and of course, cakes!!
