Harry Enochs

Mr. Enochs served as principal, teacher, and coach at FHS during the mid-twenties to late thirties. He came to Fife after graduating from the College of Puget Sound (now UPS). He is listed in their hall of fame.

1922-25
Athlete Inducted: 1974
Considered one of the greatest Logger basketball scorers of his time.
In 1924, he tallied 131 of the Loggers' 381 points, averaging 10.1 points on
a team which averaged 29. The Loggers had a 14-3 season his senior year
and he was the captain of the basketball team twice in addition to playing
varsity baseball for three years.

After graduating from CPS Mr. Enochs came to Fife High School, primarily as a coach. He brought football to Fife. His basketball players knew him as "Hack" Enochs. He took a loosing baseball team and turned it into a state champion by 1929.

In October, 1927, Mr. Wilson, Superintendent, reported in the Fifonian (the student published newspaper), that Mr. Enochs was to be the high school principal and head the history department. Of education Harry Enochs says: "School is to train us to become good citizens."

An interesting note in the society column of the Fifonian: "In October (1926) Harry Enochs was the astounding host at a quilting party at the Fife Chapel. The evening was spent in sewing after which dainty refreshments were served."

The 1929 Illahee had the following tribute to Mr. Enochs:
"To Coach Harry Enochs, in appreciation of his untiring efforts in the services he so freely rendered toward the betterment of our school, especially in the athletic program, this Sports Section of the Trojan is Dedicated.
Last year saw a marked change in Fife's athletic program. This change was due to the wonderful interest shown by the school as well as the community in football. The interest paid by the people was justified, however, when Fife won the league championship and also defeated several strong teams from the city prep schools. The championship was won a second time this year and the season was brought to a climax with a victory over Vashon Island, a highly rated team of King County.
Basket ball is becoming more popular each year with an increased student body to pick from, Fife can soon look forward to a championship.
Baseball was the big gun this year. Besides winning the League Championship, Fife twice defeated Bellarmine College, Tacoma city champs of last year and split with Lincoln High in a two game series.
With the addition of track Fife now has four major sports.
All these athletic have been coached alone by Mr. Harry Enochs, who came here four years ago. He started football and it is here to stay. His teams have won four championships to date and have always been close contenders. All the credit given him would not cover what he has done for this school and for the good of the students of whom he was a pal and a friend. Praise is due him for untiring efforts in services so freely rendered toward the betterment of our school, especially in the athletic program."

It is ironic that such a well like teacher and principal would end his career at Fife High School on a less than positive note. Mr. Enochs was fired by the school board in 1937. Mr. Enochs apparently had knowledge of illegial acts committed by the Superintendent of the district, but he did not inform the school board of these activities. Both men were fired. Mr. Enochs spent the war years working for Weyerhauser. I believe he later worked as a teacher in the Bethel School District.
