RAKU
FIRING
Recently,
the three-dimensional design class experimented with a different
way to fire glazed ceramics: raku. This method of firing
involves removing ceramic pieces from the kiln at 1700 degrees and
placing them in a garbage can full of combustible materials.
Our new portable kiln makes it easy! When the lid is placed
on the can, the materials smolder, and the smoke creates a unique
design on the piece, often resulting in metallic colors. Raku
fires are exciting because the final product is never the same!

It was a
rainy day. Perfect for controlling the smoke!
