Mr. Nixon's Information: Rm: 303 Phone: 253-517-1100 ext. 24303 Email: snixon@fife.k12.wa.us Website: http://www.fifeschools.com/fhs/staff/snixon/ Class Description and Purpose:In this course we will examine Algebra and Trigonometry concepts based on functions and models of real world situations. We will also look at probability and data analysis throughout the course. The purpose of this course is to ready college bound students for precalculus and other advanced classes as well as creating an understanding of advanced topics in mathematics.
Student Outcomes: Students will be able to apply the concepts of the course to real-world situations and use algebra to model these situations. Individuals will be able to work in groups to identify and solve problems using acquired knowledge. Individuals will be able to use multiple strategies (technology, groups, etc.) to apply mathematics concepts to problems. Grading
Your grade will be determined by your accomplishments in three areas: your Homework, Accelerated Math and Assessments/Checkpoints. Your score will be computed using weighted averages. 60% of your grade will be determined by Assessments and Checkpoints, 20% will be determined by homework and the other 20% will be from the Accelerated Math program. Here is the breakdown of percentage points:
A: 93.0 and above C: 73.0 to 76.9999 A-: 90.0 to 92.9999 C-: 70.0 to 72.9999 B+: 87.0 to 89.9999 D: 60.0 to 69.9999 B: 83.0 to 86.9999 F: 59.9999 and below B-: 80.0 to 82.9999 C+: 77.0 to 79.9999
Homework - This section is homework scores and in class assignments. Each assignment will be worth 5 points based on completeness. Students will be responsible for asking questions and checking for correct answers during the course of the semester. Active learning is the key to success. Accelerated Math – This section will be determined by a computer scanning program that builds skills and checks for understanding. Objectives mastered will determine this portion of the Accelerated Math score. Total points for this portion will be 500 points broken down into 100 points per grading period and 200 points for a final total. Grading period scores will be determined based on the class averages and median scores.
Assessments/Checkpoints - This section will include exactly what it says - assessments and checkpoints. Each will be corrected and scored. Each chapter will be broken into two 25-point checkpoints and a 100-point assessment. A student with an unexcused absence or truancy on the day of an assessment will receive a 0 with no opportunity for a make-up. If you score a 70% or below on the assessment you may retake the exam for a maximum score of 75%. Make-ups or retests will be given before or after school by appointment. There will be a comprehensive final worth 200 points.
