2009-2010

Mrs. Gibson teaching the "elevens" math game!  Novelty and Variety at work!

Mr. Wolfe, Mrs. Nyhus, Mrs. McGhee, and Mrs. Heiberg received grant monies for technology this year, and bought two sets of netbooks for our students to use.  Here Mrs. McGhee's students are working on elapsed time websites.  Authenticity, novelty, and variety!

Students from Mr. Wolfe's class playing a game that they developed after reading the book Fourth Grade Rats by Jerry Spinelli.  Students presented their games to the class as a group.  Finally, boards were set-up around the room and students were able to play other groups’ games. Novelty and variety!

Mrs. Heiberg's second graders and Mrs. McGhee's fourth graders working together at the Fife Science and Technology Showcase on Jan. 21.  These two classes received netbooks via a grant, and were working on letters to their penpals in Missouri!

Mr. Wolfe's class at their "Night of the Notables," Jan. 28.   Each student was to read a biography on a famous person and make a Powerpoint presentation, along with dressing up like their subject. Definitely a novel concept!

Jump Rope for Heart was held Friday, Feb. 26, at Hedden.  Our PE teacher, Mr. Walton, organized the events for the day.  Our students raised money for heart health!

February's featured school on the district WOW board - Hedden!

Mrs. McGhee's class playing a place value math game from Mrs. Gibson

“How do you choose a book?

Students in our class shared all the different types of things they like to read & why they like them, so we can use the info. as an anchor chart if we’re ever finding it difficult to find something new to read.” Mr. Wolfe's 4th grade class

Mrs. Ennis' class playing a math game

Ms. Allen's fifth graders studying the process of design in science. Their first project was to design a bridge that could bear at least 20 pounds. Very exciting day!

These pretzels are from a skeletal system unit Ms. Dively (student teacher) taught in Mr. Wolfe's 4th grade classroom. They created pretzel skeletons, and had to make sure they had all the major bones – fun part – they got to either salt or cinnamon/sugar  them and eat ‘em up!

Mrs. Adams' class did a math activity where they were supposed to spend $50 at Safeway.  They had real advertisement flyers from the store, and couldn't exceed the $50 limit.  Talk about authentic!

Mrs. Stadnik recently had her second grade class do a pattern activity with a string and different cereals.  Kids were doing patterns:

Growing patterns, color patterns, even/odd, etc.

Ms. Brewer's class did an activity to help students with adjectives.  Miss Kaylin, who is doing a teaching practicum in the class, brought in live fish and had them describe them.  How engaging!  The fish have also now been added to the aquarium in the office.

Our fifth grade students were very engaged in their musical they presented on Dec. 11.  Great job, fifth graders!  Thanks for all your hard work, Mrs. Lewis!

Mrs. Fuls' third graders hard at work in the computer lab!

Our 2nd annual Excellent Vocabulary Parade was held Thursday, Jan. 15.  Staff and students dressed as a word.  Click here to see more staff and students highly engaged in vocabulary!

That's engagement!!!

Students in Mrs. McGhee/Mrs. Grant's class got a lesson in authenticity with a unit pricing lesson in math.  Students had to calculate which type of fruit snack was the better buy!  Then they got to eat them!

Mr. Wolfe's fourth grade class recently had their "Night of the Notables."  Each student dressed and acted the part of the subject of a biography they'd read, along with presenting a Powerpoint presentation!

Affirmation of Performance and Affiliation is evident in this photo….

A group of 4th Graders from Mr. Williams' class worked together to help paint the Annual District Art Show Banner.  Each of the 6 schools’ banners will be hung at CJH outside of the Performing Arts Center for a whole year beginning May 27th, 2009.

Affirmation of Performance, Affiliation, and Product Focus were at work at our May 14 assembly with our own Hedden Drumming Ensemble.  Mrs. Lewis explained the discipline and cooperation required to be part of this group.  They performed several pieces for parents, students, and staff.

Authenticity and Novelty and Variety were evident at Titlow Beach, during the May 26 fourth grade field trip to study tidepool animals.  Students found seastars, crabs, anemones, and strange types of seaweed during the trip, which complements our Discovering Puget Sound science unit.

Authenticity, Product Focus, Affiliation, and Affirmation of Performances were on tap at a recent Hedden field trip to Junior Achievement BizTown.  Students from 4th and 5th grades went through a month-long curriculum to prepare to run various businesses such as this Mariners store.

Our Hedden Math Relay teams placed fourth and 41st respectively at the recent Math Relays, in a field of 83 teams!  Way to go!

Our Hedden Running Club ran the equivalent of a marathon, 26.2 miles, during practices and the 2K shuffle at the Sound to Narrows race June 13.  Team members learned about nutrition as well as conditioning to prepare for the big race!
