-Inspired by the Collages of Henri Matisse- Drawing with Scissors by the Hedden Fourth Graders After a successful career as a painter, Henri Matisse was confined to bed with a stomach ailment. His ability to paint was obviously limited, so he began a second career as a collage artist. His shapes were simple, but interesting. The fourth graders were inspired by his story and his work as they created their own collages. We began by creating our own painted papers from which we later cut. We spent quite a bit of time discussing the components of a successful composition. The students were very purposeful in creating works of art that may appear, as did Matisse's, to be a bit random.
