April 2008

Edgewood (AP) We checked in with four of our students to see how it's going in Mrs. McGhee's class.  Here's what they said:

Kristian:

The last couple of days we have had the WASL.  We have 3 subjects:  math, reading, and writing.  Reading is pretty easy; it only takes about 1 hour.  Math is easy, too.  Since I do Noggin Knockers, the explanations are easy.  The writing takes all day and it's pretty hard.  We have to write about a subject in several paragraphs.  We chew gum during the WASL because it makes us think better.  We have breaks and snacks because it is good brain food.  The WASL isn't the best, but it's definitely not the worst.

Tazz:

In Literacy Cafe we choose a book that is in our reading level.  Our group name is named after the book we're doing.  Then we have reading assignments.  When you're done with the assignment you get either a vocabulary sheet or Literature Circle sheet.  When you're done with the book, then you have to take an Accelerated Reader (AR) test to see if you understood the book.

Nikolette:

In math we are now doing fractions.  So far, we have learned that the numerator is the number above the bar in a fraction, and the denominator is the one on the bottom.  "I think I will use fractions in my life plenty of times, says Gabrielle.  "It's kind of fun.  I like the numerator and the denominator."  Before we started fractions, we did geometry.  "There are so many terms!" says Patricia.  "Angles are interesting, line segments are fun, and shapes are easy, so pretty much I like everything but the terms."

Next I will talk aboaut the diorama book reports.  We read a historical fiction book, then made a diorama using our favorite scene.  "My favorite scene was when there was a fire and Kaya was trying to escape with her horse, Steps High, and her baby pony," says Kayla.  "I really liked doing the book report."

That concludes my report; I hope you enjoyed it.  Thanks!

Gabrielle:

One of my favorite subjects is Social Studies.  I say this because I have learned so much.  I used to think all Native Americans lived in teepees, but now I know that most Washington Indians, depending on the climate, would live in other types of homes.  I am also excited because this year we do a thing called "Where in Washington?" where somebody from a different city in Washington will give us clues and we have to guess where they live.  It's kind of like a game show.

Speaking of games, at our school we have an event called Jump Rope for Heart.  In it, you collect money for the American Heart Association and do contests with jump ropes.
