Book Reports
We will be doing five book reports this year. I will be explaining these assignments in more detail in class when we approach the particular time in the year. The schedule and types of reports we will be doing are listed below:
October - Reader's Choice. You need to choose a book at your appropriate reading level (a chapter book) about a subject of your choice. It can be either fiction or nonfiction. I will be giving you a book report format on which to write your information. Author's purpose: To entertain/inform. Choose the book by Sept. 26 and show to Mrs. McGhee for approval. DUE DATE: Oct. 24
November/December - Fantasy. Choose a fantasy book and do a poster board presentation with words/pictures telling about your book. Author's purpose: To entertain. Choose the book by Nov. 5 and show to Mrs. McGhee for approval. DUE DATE: Dec. 12
January/February - African-American History Month. Choose a prominent African-American in history and read a biography about him/her. Do a collage on poster board showing the main themes in your subject's life; in other words, what was she/he famous for? Author's purpose: To inform. Choose your person/book by Jan. 9 and let Mrs. McGhee know. DUE DATE: Feb. 6 Click here for examples on our Student Work page
March - Historical Fiction. Choose a historical novel (Mrs. McGhee can help) to read, and then make a diorama showing your favorite scene. Author's purpose: To inform and entertain. Choose book by March 6 and show to Mrs. McGhee for approval. DUE DATE: April 3 Click here for more diorama instructions April/May - Mystery. Choose a mystery book at your reading level (a chapter book). This time you will be doing a poster, skit, or video advertisement about your book. You will tell about the book in order to persuade others to read it, without giving the ending away. You want to "sell" the book, just like a commercial. Author's purpose: To entertain; student's purpose: to persuade. Choose your book by April 24 and show to Mrs. McGhee for approval. DUE DATE: May 29 Click here for more mystery book report directions
June -- Summer Reading List. Students will share about their favorite book with the class. Students will choose a book they've read this year. I will type up a list of the titles and authors and make copies. During their book talks, students share an exciting part of the book without giving away the ending. Classmates listen and circle titles that sound interesting. The end result: personalized summer reading lists! Sign up by June 5 . DUE DATE: June 10
