Reading Strategies

Tip #2 : When reading with your child, if they make an error in reading a word, allow them to complete reading the entire sentence. Then stop them and ask"Did that make sense?" Have them read the sentence over and ask them what word might fit with the other text in the sentence. Point out the beginning letter sounds in the word, and the ending sounds. More often than not, students will have an "Aha!" moment and come up with the correct word. Remember: children should always be reading for meaning!

Tip #1:  The most important thing that you can do for your child to help them become a better reader is make sure that they are reading books that are "Just Right." A "Just Right" book is one that, when you open it to any page, your child does not miss more than two words in a paragraph. Reading books that are too difficult does not help a child improve their reading. It actually has the opposite effect by making them become frustrated, lose comprehension because they are trying too hard to read difficult words, and it takes away the joy that reading gives children.
