Mrs.
Schreiber, English teacher at Fife High School, recently earned
National Board Certification in Adolescent Young Adult English Language
Arts through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
National
Board Certification is the highest credential in the teaching profession.
National Board
Certification measures a teacher's practice against high and
rigorous standards. The process is an extensive series of performance-based
assessments that includes teaching portfolios, student work samples,
videotapes, and thorough analyses of the candidate's classroom teaching
and student learning. Teachers also complete a series of written
exercises that probe the depth of their subject-matter knowledge,
as well as their understanding of how to teach those subjects to
their students. (www.nbpts.org)
Mrs.
Schreiber began the process in August of 2003 and finished in May
of 2004. On average candidates report the process taking approximately
200 hours to complete. For two of her portfolio entries Mrs. Schreiber
submitted videotapes and written analyses of a whole class discussion
from her College English class and a small group discussion from
her English 11 class. For the other two portfolio entries she tracked
the reading and writing growth of students from different ability
levels and had to demonstrate her professional growth and contributions
to the education community. Mrs. Schreiber took the National Board
exam, covering six sub-topics of English education, in May. Candidates
receive results the November following their completion of the process.
Congratulations,
Melissa! We are proud of you.
