Pertussis Outbreak

This is an important health message from the Fife School District regarding the recent Whooping Cough Outbreak. As many of you may or may not know Governor Gregoire, as of Friday May 4, announced emergency state action to slow the spread of whooping cough Statewide. Funds to offer low cost and more availability have been allocated by the State. This declared state epidemic poses a very significant and (possibly fatal) threat to young children and adults. It is a disease most often passed on by infected adults who do not have up to date vaccinations. Even if you have had the vaccine in the past, the immunity can wear off over time.  In order to stop the spread of Pertussis (Whooping Cough), Public Health is encouraging all adults to get the Tdap immunization, as well as ALL children who are 11 years of age or older. This vaccine is required annually anyway for all 6th graders to attend school in the fall. Several walk-in clinics and pharmacies are being specifically set up for this as well. We recommend that parents speak with their health care providers about getting the Tdap immunization as soon as possible.

Our children’s health and well-being is our highest priority. If you have any questions or concerns, please call your school’s health nurse.
