VISION STATEMENT

 

 

 

Surprise Lake Middle School is a school that promotes and encourages academic and personal achievements.

 

 

In order to realize this vision, Surprise Lake Middle School will:

Organize our around engaging students in meaningful quality work.

Create an environment that is disciplined, positive, safe, and conducive to teaching and learning.

Recognize that all students can learn more than they are now learning.

Acknowledge that students learn at different rates and in different ways.

Consciously demonstrate respect for all students and staff.

Recognize individual contributions and achievements.

School Improvement Plan

 

 

STANDARD 1:

DEVELOPING A SHARED UNDERSTANDING OF THE NEED FOR CHANGE:

The members of the board of education, the superintendent, central office staff, principals, teacher leaders, leaders of parent organizations, and key community leaders have a common understanding of the nature of the problems and opportunities that confront the school district and base their decisions of these issues on a common body of fact and information.

Specific School Objective # 1: Surprise Lake Middle School will continue to establish the understanding of the need for change in order to create a continuous school improvement program.

Site Council examination of all data from Standard Bearer Assessment Report.

Developmental team presentation to staff using the "Who’s on First" video.

Included discussion recognizing the need for change in a system.

Parent, staff, student surveys gathered information.

Teacher panel comprised of Roger Miller, Hal Phillips and Mari Hoff discussing the history of Surprise Lake Middle School.

 

Result: All actions stated above were completed by the Surprise Lake Middle School Staff with the result of meeting the school objective with the overall understanding for the need for change in public education. There is a clear understanding that change must / will constantly occur within society, family structure, communities, and schools.

STANDARD 2:

DEVELOPING SHARED BELIEFS AND VISION:

The school district and its community develop within the local context a compelling vision of what schools can be and how schools should be related to the community-a vision capable of earning wide support in the school district and in the community and consistent with a set of well-articulated beliefs regarding the nature of schools and the schooling enterprise.

Specific School Objective # 2: Review Surprise Lake Middle School’s Beliefs and Vision statement with input from Site Based Council and presentation to the Partners in Education for input and approval.

Annually present adopted beliefs and vision statement to Site Council for potential changes and/or approval.

Annually present updated vision statement to Partners in Education for potential changes and/or improvement.

Result: Surprise Lake Middle School has created, with input from Site Council and Partners in Education, a new vision statement with indicators as to how we will function.

 

 

 

STANDARD 3:

DEVELOPING A FOCUS ON STUDENTS AND ON THE QUALITY OF WORK PROVIDED TO STUDENTS

Throughout the school district there is a clear focus on students and on the quality of the work provided to students-work that students find interesting, challenging, and satisfying and that results in their learning what is expected by schools, parents, and the community.

Specific School Objective # 3: Surprise Lake Middle School will offer students engaging work designed around The Ten Design Qualities from Standard Bearer Schools.

Developmental team reviewed The Ten Design Qualities with staff.

Used protocols in staff meetings to enhance lessons.

Introduced the levels of engagement to staff with time to discuss and analyze them in monthly staff meetings.

Used descriptive reviews to enhance lessons.

Continued to encourage use of The Ten Design Qualities and Standards of Learning in creating an engaging lesson for students.

Result: Staff successfully completed protocols in each department meeting. Staff surveys indicate that protocol procedure has increased communication among peers and promotes collaboration within departments and grade levels.

STANDARD 4:

DEVELOPING STRUCTURES FOR PARTICIPATORY LEADERSHIP

The district develops patterns of leadership and a structure of relationships such that teachers are leaders, principals are leaders of leaders, and all district level activity is focused on providing directions and support for schools.

Specific School Objective # 4:

We will introduce standards 4,5,6 to staff during staff meetings and WOW early release days.

We will communicate work being done on these standards to parents and community via school and district newsletters and web site information.

STANDARD 5

DEVELOPING STRUCTURES FOR RESULTS-ORIENTED DECISION MAKING

The district develops a results-oriented management system and a quality-focused decision-making process that are consistent with the beliefs that guide the system and that ensure that the measures of quality conform with the requirements of those who provide support to students and the schools.

Specific School Objective # 5:

Strengthen existing site-based councils including parent membership component.

Examine the goals and purpose of site-based teams to complement Standard Bearer work.

Examine assessment and survey results and use information to guide system decisions.

STANDARD 6

DEVELOPING STRUCTURES FOR CONTINUITY

The district provides for stability in leadership, structure, and culture over time, including support for innovative efforts that produce desired results.

Specific School Objective # 6: Coordinate and develop staff induction programs.

Results:

We introduced standards 4, 5, and 6 to staff during staff meetings and WOW early release days.

District has developed staff induction program.

NEEDS ASSESSMENT

A comprehensive needs assessment was conducted by our staff, Partners In Education, and Site-based School Improvement Team. The following are the components of our comprehensive needs assessment:

Continue to focus on increase of communication between school and community.

45.6% meeting Writing standards

40.6% meeting Reading standards

21.5% meeting Math standards

76.4% meeting Listening standards

Needs identified through the Partners In Education:

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN

 

The 2002-2003 School Improvement Plan includes goals and objectives relative to standards 1-6 in the Fife School District Network 2000 project as well as plans for strategies and activities designed to address standards 7-10.

Adequate Progress for the 2002-2003 School Improvement Plan will be achieved when 3 of the 3 stated goals have been met.

Increase focus on Math

Teachers to training on math curriculum that was adopted two years ago

Specific School Objective # 2: We will continue to examine the scope and sequence of 6-12 curriculum.

 

Established Need:

Staff surveys from last years 6 — 12 curriculum planning meetings indicated a desire to spend more time on this subject.

Need exists to clearly define the scope and sequence of curriculum with the opening of Columbia Junior High.

Strategy/Action Plan:

Dedicate time on either LID days or Standard Bearer days to meet with staff from SLMS and FHS to examine and discuss the Standards of Learning.

Continued work with Dr. Harruff on curriculum adoption (English/Science)

 

Progress/ Evaluation Plan:

Increased awareness and implementation of the Standards of Learning 6-12.

Scope and sequence of curriculum for transition from Columbia Junior High to Fife High School is established.

2003 WASL scores will improve.

 

FIFE SCHOOL DISTRICT STANDARD 4:

 

DEVELOPING STRUCTURES FOR PARTICIPATORY LEADERSHIP

 

The district develops patterns of leadership and a structure of relationships such that teachers are leaders, principals are leaders of leaders, and all district level activity is focused on providing directions and support for schools.

 

 

Specific School Objective # 3: We will continue to focus on improving school climate.

 

Established Need:

Harris Survey, Student/Staff Surveys, Parent Communication, and Site Council communication has indicated improved communication and shared leadership opportunities throughout the building.

Work must continue in these efforts.

 

Strategy/Action Plan:

Continue training for Site Council.

Implement Site Council/Staff retreat.

Provide continued leadership opportunities for staff.

Continue and enhance student/staff recognition.

 

Progress/Evaluation Plan:

Increased rating on Harris survey in the area of staff involvement, communication, and leadership opportunities.

Provide support to teachers throughout the year in efforts to create a working environment conducive to improved teacher instruction.

Examples would include but are not limited to professional training opportunities, Site Council training, Site Council dinner, staff shirts, staff recognition, purified water in the staff room, staff retreats, social functions, staff breakfasts.

 

STANDARD 5: DEVELOPING STRUCTURES FOR RESULTS-ORIENTED DECISION MAKING

 

The district develops a results-oriented management system and a quality-focused decision-making process that are consistent with the beliefs that guide the system and that ensure that the measures of quality conform with the requirements of those who provide support to students and the schools.

 

STANDARD 6: DEVELOPING STRUCTURES FOR CONTINUITY

 

The district provides for stability in leadership, structure, and culture over time, including support for innovative efforts that produce desired results.

 

STANDARD 7: PROVIDING ONGOING SUPPORT

 

The school district provides systems of training and development, incentives, and social and political support for those who are committed to the district’s belief and vision and widens support for the pursuit of the beliefs and vision among all members of the community.

 

STANDARD 8: FOSTERING INNOVATION AND FLEXIBILITY

 

The district develops a policy environment and management system that foster flexibility and rapid response; that encourage innovative use of time, technology, and space; that encourage novel and improved staffing patterns; and create forms of curriculum organization that are responsive to the needs of students.

STANDARD 9: EMPLOYING TECHNOLOGY

The school district and community display a common understanding of the transformational nature of changes in information-processing technologies, and the district provides all students and adults who work in the schools the tools required for quality work.

 

STANDARD 10: FOSTERING COLLABORATION

The school district encourages and supports the creation of relationships within the school district, between schools and parents, and among those agencies and groups that provide service to children and youth, in order to ensure that each child has the support needed to succeed in school and in the community.

Established need:

 

Based on the work done in the last two years with Standards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 in the Standard Bearer Network, we need to continue moving forward with Standards 7, 8, 9, and 10 in order to systemically improve the quality of the programs that we provide our students.

Strategy/Action Plan Relative to Standards 7, 8, 9, 10:

We will introduce standards 7, 8, 9, and 10 to staff during staff meetings and WOW early release days/enrichment afternoons.

We will communicate via school and district newsletters and web site information.

Progress/Evaluation Plan:

Review agendas and/or minutes of Standard Bearer training

Focus in-service work on the introduction of standards 7, 8, 9, and 10.

Use building leaders to lead and facilitate these in-service activities.

Completion of above stated strategies.
