HP Technology for Teaching Grant Project

Surprise Lake Middle School

Project overview

Over the past year our team has been working on using technology to integrate curriculum in the areas of Science, Math, Social Studies, and Language Arts.  Our team consisted of individuals from each curricular area as well as a wide range of technology backgrounds (earlier adopters to reluctant users).  We used the topic of weather as our focal point when designing lessons and projects.  We wanted students to see that even though their subjects are taught in separate classes that they are intertwined.  We did this through a variety of projects ranging from web quests, travel projects, city comparison presentations, to short story writing.  Along the way we found that through the use of technology we were able to not only increase student involvement in their learning by increasing attendance, and increasing project creativity, we were also able to increase student scores as well.

Just a tiny update on the grant.  Jeff Hunt and I went to Philly the last week in June and presented this website as well as various examples of student work at the conference.  During a luncheon sponsered by HP we were notified that Surprise Lake Middle School would be receiving a second year of funding which included around $57,000 dollars in equipment and training for the school.
