1.  What is a mixture? Give examples.

A mixture is whenever two or more substances are put together.  Some examples of a mixture are flour and sugar,

cinnamon and sugar, and salt and pepper.  RB

A mixture is when two or more substances like juice & water and waffles & maple syrup are mixed together. CAL

A mixture is whenever two or more substances (matter) are put together.  Examples:  cake mix, colors, us,

soda and a lot more things.  ME

A mixture is whenever two or more substances or matter are combined.  Ex. A cake is one because it has eggs, milk, etc.,

and so are we.  We have water, blood, bones, etc.  CP

2.  What is a solution? Give examples.

A solution is a special mixture that is formed when one solute dissolves into a solvent.  Some examples of solutions

are sugar and water and Jell o-powder and water. RB

3.  Is salt and water a mixture?  A solution?  Is it both a mixture

and a solution?

It is both a mixture and a solution because the salt dissolves into the water to form a solution, and it is also a mixture,

because they are combined, and they are two different substances. BG

Yes, salt and water are both solution and mixture because a mixture is two or more things combined.  Also, a solution is

a mixture that is formed when a solute (salt) dissolves into the solvent (water). RC

Salt and water is a mixture and a solution because two or more things are put together and salt dissolved into the water. KW

Yes, because salt mixed with water is called a mixture.  Yes salt & water is a mixture & a solution, because the

salt & water is mixed together & the salt dissolved in the water so it’s a solution. BA

Salt and water is a mixture and a solution.  It is a mixture because it has two substances.  It is a solution because the

salt dissolves into the water. TH

4.  How do you know when a solid and a liquid form a solution?

You can tell when a solution is made when the solute (usually solid) dissolves into the solvent (usually liquid).  CL

You know when you can’t see the solid in the water anymore because it dissolved. MO

5.  How can mixtures be separated?

Mixtures can be separated if you put the mixtures through a filtering process. SL

First you use screen filters to take out the big stuff then you add water to dissolve the solute.  Afterwards,

you use a paper filter and take out the substance that’s insoluble and evaporate the water. DP

Mixtures can be separated by straining, using a coffee filter, or by evaporation.  CG

You can separate mixtures in many ways.  You can use screens, filter, strainers, evaporation, etc. to separate mixtures. TH

6.  How are screen filters and paper filters alike? How are they

different?

Screen and paper filters are alike because they both play the same role to take a substance out of a substance.

They are different because the screen filter takes solids from solids; the paper filter takes solids from liquids. CAL

They’re alike because they both filter things.  Also they both have holes.  They’re different because

they’re made out of different materials. SS

Screen filters and paper filters are alike because they both filter things, and they both have holes.  They are different

because their hole sizes are smaller, and they are made out of different materials.  RC

They both separate things.  They are different because the screens holes are bigger than the filter, and they both

are made from different things. GD
