6th Grade General Science Syllabus 2007-2008

6th grade science is an inquiry based program.  Students learn through investigations of materials.  The following outlines the units we will investigate this year.

All work in Washington State Science classes is guided by the Washington Essential Learning Requirements (EALRs) and the GLEs (Grade Level Expectations) which can be viewed on the OSPI website:   @ http://www.k12.wa.us/CurriculumInstruct/default.aspx

September – October

Scientific Method  ~  Systems Structure  ~ Measurement

GLEs: 1.2.1, 2.1.1, 2.1.2, 2.2.1, 2.2.2, 2.2.3, 2.2.4, 2.2.5,

Using the Foss Variable Kit we will learn and practice the scientific method which will require students to become skilled in using equipment and measuring with the metric system.

November – January

Scientific Method   ~  Physical Systems   ~  Measurement

GLEs: 1.1.1, 1.2.3, 2.1.1, 2.1.2, 2.2.1, 2.2.2, 2.2.3, 2.2.4, 2.2.5,

Using the Foss Mixtures & Solutions Kit we will continue practicing the scientific method, measuring volume and mass with balance scales, cylinders, beakers, & syringes, while learning about matter and properties.

February – Spring Break

Human Body Systems

GLE: 1.2.1, 1.2.8

Using the Foss Human Brain & Senses Kit we will learn the components and functions of major organ systems; nervous, muscular, skeletal, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, urinary, & reproductive.

April – June

Living Systems  ~  Earth and Space Systems

GLE: 1.1.6, 1.2.1, 1.2.5, 1.2.6, 1.2.7, 1.3.7

Using the Foss Diversity of Life Kit we will learn to classify organisms, their life cycles, traits, and genetics.

We will record the moon’s phases through the year and learn about its relationship with Earth, the causes of seasonal changes on Earth, and the orbital cycles of planets, moons, asteroids, and comets.

LAB EQUIPMENT USE

All equipment is to be handle only when necessary.

Consequences for improper use:
1st Time – Observation only at next lab with highest possible grade of 50%.
2nd Time – Phone call home with documentation in student file.
3rd Time – Referral to office.

LOST EQUIPMENT

Each group is responsible for all listed equipment being present at each station before and after the lab.  The cost of replacing any missing equipment will be divided equally among group members and their student accounts will be charged.
