Welcome to Surprise Lake Middle School and my homepage.  My name is Mr Crudo and I teach Resource Room Special Education.

This is my 6th year in the Fife School District.  I started out in the high school but moved over to the middle school last year.  I was not sure if I would enjoy the middle school environment when I first moved over but I have found the staff, students and parents to be a wonderful group of people.  Everyone at Surpise Lake really cares that every student is a success.

You may hear your kids tell you about Mr. Crudo and his bicycle!!  I ride my bike to school everyday (rain or shine) unless there is an important event or meeting.  I am the fellow to the right in the yellow shirt.  Mr Ross (SLMS science teacher) rides behinds me and takes advantage of my powerful peddling style.  I also like to coach soccer in my spare time.  I coach 2 select soccer teams in the area as well as the Fife High School Boys Soccer Team.

Commonly asked questions:

I am sure that there are a few things that you want to know about my classroom.  I will try and answer those questions in Q&A form.

1)  Q-Is there homework?

A- No, there is no homework in my class.  The reason has to do with our need to document student needs and improvement.  If a parent would like for homework to be sent home,   I am happy to put together a practice packet.  This material will not be graded.

2)  Q- What is the grading policy?

A- Grades are based on effort toward student improvement based on the written Individual Education Plan (IEP).  Since every student has an IEP, grading will be based on the effort to improve and not on actualy improvement.  It is hoped that effort will lead to an increase in acheivement.  Each student will be working on an individual curriculum that will be adjusted as need arises.

3)  Q- How is my child exited from special education?

A- Students do improve in academic skills and can be exited from Special Education.  They are tested during their 3 year evaluation to determine if they continue to need Special Services.

4)  Q- Will my child be recieving help in general education classes?

A- Yes.  We have a para-professioanl who works with students in the classes and communicates daily with the teacher to make sure students are keeping up and working on the classwork. General education teachers are also informed as to student needs and curriculum modifications that can be used to help students be successful in the classroom.

5)  Q- Does attendance effect grades?

A- Yes!!!  Students need to be AT school to improve their academic skills or reach IEP goals.  It is a given that all students will attend school on a regular basis.  We understand that students have absences for illness or family emergency, howeverattendences is an improtant contributor to success.
